This exhibition provides a glimpse into the transition from the late modernism of the late 20th century art to postmodernism. In the ever-changing art scene, which mirrored the tumultuous political landscape of the world, artists sought innovation while resisting conventions and rejecting conformity. The exhibition introduces works by globally renowned artists who led the course of contemporary art by opening new forms, while also showcasing the works of Korean masters who, while embracing Western modernism, explored their own unique identity and contributed to the development of independent Korean modernist art. Additionally, the exhibition presents resistance or alternatives to abstract modernism, such as pop art and new figurative painting, along with non-abstract tendencies in the West and pop art works from Korea, China, and Japan. This exhibition provides an opportunity to appreciate works created by outstanding artists on the diverse cultural ground, acknowledging that even within one overarching trend, these artists emerged from unique cultural backgrounds.
